Bedrooms were only made for sleeping in and dressing in. You would go to bed and then wake up and dress and then leave for the day. Bedrooms were very private but you wouldn't really keep anything in your room just clothes and a bed. It was just a place for you and nobody would usually into your room except for family. It wasn't a place to hang out or to socialize. Commonly the bedrooms were made for only children, and parents. A lot of times in a large plantation, there were many bedrooms in the house.
This bedroom is showing wealth by using expensive dyes and paint.

external image DSC_0367.JPGParlor (2)
Was the room you first room you walked into when you went into the house. It was a very uncomfortable and formal room. Many antiques and fancy decor was placed in this room. In some cases there would be two parlors; one that is much more formal than the other. This room is usually used for guests that were invited into your home and you would talk about recent events and their trip to your house. the other room wasn't as formal because it was used for family and other not as important guests.
The parlor shown here has a display of polished swords and guns; which also is a way to display one's wealth.

external image DSC_0375.JPGKitchen (1)
This room was not very nice. It had dishes and food cooked in it. Not a lot of people would go into the kitchen. It wasn't nice, it wasn't formal. It was all the opposite of the house. Mostly slaves/hired hands would prepare the food for the parties and family. There were many course meals and very expensive, but that was only when a party was going on but if it was just a family night, it was not a lot.
The kitchen is not supposed to be decorated because not many people will see it.

external image DSC_0364.JPGFormal Dinning Room (1)
The dining room had tables and nice china. The formal dining room was very elegant and formal. Important guests and friends ate very expensive meals with many courses. The courses would come as they were prepared by the cook/chef. You would normally eat an appetizer either in the parlor or in the formal dining room and then return to the formal parlor and talk while some of the main courses were prepared. Then you would eat the main course or even another appetizer. after that you and your guest(s) would again return to the parlor and chat while the chef and or cook would prepare the dessert. And after its done, you would eat the dessert which would be as fancy as the dinner/lunch/breakfast meal.
This room has nice china and nice indigo furniture that would show off how rich the owners were and sometimes the wallpaper would be really nice.

external image drooom4.jpgInformal Dinning Room (1)
This room wasn't as nice as the formal dinning room because guests would not eat in this room. This room was for the family that lived in the house. It didn't have real fancy furniture or indigo wallpaper and not a lot of nice china. Friends usually wouldn't eat in here either. And a lot of time, family would have guests over to show off the house and so there wasn't a lot of time spent in the informal room. When there wasn't guest over, they didn't have big, fancy meals. They had nice and small foods.

Dance Hall (1)
When the richer people would have parties and other rich guests over. They would have classical music playing while dancing and socializing and drinking went on. It was a nicely decorated room, very fancy and classical rich people style. Everyone would be dressed up. More usually, parties were held here. If there was not enough room in the parlor then they would use the dance hall.

Guest House/Room (4)
These rooms were pretty neat. They were nicely decorated with expensive furniture and wallpaper. Colors were red and indigo. They were that way because home owners wanted to show off their money, which they had. A lot of times, people would come and go and admirer these rooms/houses. But only guests stayed. No family that lived in the house would sleep in this room. Usually slaves/hired help would clean the rooms (make the bed and clean the floors.) Slaves/hired help had there own rooms too and it would have nice wallpaper and indigo clothing. Why you may ask? Because if someone wealthy was going through the house, and if they were to go into the room, the room would have a nice touch to it, once again, showing off the family's wealth.

Laundry/Dish Room (1)
Laundry room was a place where towels and clothes were washed by slaves/hired help. Not a very pretty room. Very plain and not a lot of people would go into this room. It wasn't a social room and you wouldn't eat in this room, or sleep. Only cleaning worth.
